Special Delivery Requests

You would be amazed at what people ship these days, so it is no wonder at all that people wonder about special delivery requests. And sometimes special delivery requests have little to do what is being shipped and more to do with what time of day you actually want it to be delivered.

Here are several things you should keep in mind when making special requests for deliveries:

  • Remember that some things simply can’t be couriered. Animals, perishable items, and pricey pieces of artwork are a few of the items that First Delivery Service can’t deliver.
  • Also think about safety when asking for special requests. Of course you want to be sure that the item is delivered in one piece and that it can be safely dropped off at the location where you need it to go.
  • Be sure to pack your items carefully, even if you’re requesting that they be handled carefully because they are fragile. It is not reasonable to assume that you don’t need to pack items as carefully if you tell the courier that it is fragile.
  • Some couriers will deliver items after hours and even at odd times of the day or night, but you should never assume that they will. Many couriers can’t be bothered to go the extra mile that it takes in order to do this, so call ahead and find one who will.
  • Ask about special handling for certain items like medical supplies, pharmaceutical supplies, or machine parts. It is always best to supply the courier with information about what’s inside of your package so that you know it will arrive at its destination in one piece. Some items do require special handling, but they won’t receive that special handling if the courier is not aware of what’s inside.
  • Look for a company that offers reliable service and gets great reviews from past companies, especially if the timing of your delivery is crucial.
  • Don’t forget that sometimes documents require special handling as well. Paper is more than just paper in many cases! Find out about the options you have when you need it most.
  • Some types of deliveries require special knowledge and / or certifications, so make sure that you have checked the credentials of the company you hire to make the delivery. Those certifications exist for a reason—they indicate to you, the customer, that this person knows what it takes to deliver items like those you are sending.

Many people don’t even realize that they have so many options when it comes to special deliveries. Most package delivery services have us preprogrammed to think that the way they do things typically is the only way they can do things. But the true test of whether a courier service is up to the highest standards of quality is whether they will step outside of their comfort zone and go above and beyond the call of duty.

It certainly never hurts to call and ask if your request is even possible. In fact, it is best to actually make the call before making plans that require your demands to be carried out as you need. You would be surprised how far some courier service companies will go to make sure that you get (and send) exactly what you need, when you need it. A courier that takes great care in delivering quickly and carefully every time is invaluable.
